Information Technology

Networking Academy

This two-year program is an advanced course in networking and covers everything from basic cabling to programming routers and understanding how messages are transferred from one computer to another over networks spanning countries and continents. This curriculum was developed by Cisco Systems, Inc. and prepares students for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and the CompTIA Network+ industry certification exams. These exams are recognized throughout the world as industry standards. With the exception of lab work, all coursework is through interactive, multimedia presentations. All exams are taken on the Internet using Cisco's assessment server. Students need good math, reading and comprehension skills. This is a college-level course with college credit options as described below.
 
   
For students in grades: 11-12 (Exceptions for 10th grade with instructor approval)
Credits: A maximum of three credits per year
Graduation Requirement: Math, Science and Technology- A student who is enrolled in NETWORKING ACADEMY 2 the second year of the program will be able to earn one math credit and one science credit toward graduation requirements and the title COMPUTER SCIENCE will appear on schedules, report cards and transcripts with separate grades. The math credit will not have a name, but is recognized by all Vermont high schools. MAUHS students can earn the required 0.5 Technology credit by completing the first year of this program
Prerequisite: Creative Computing and/or Computer Technology and Networking or Instructor approval
Suggested Preparation: Computer Technology & Networking, word processing skills, and good reading and comprehension skills
Post High School Education: Networking graduates have enrolled in Rochester Inst. of Technology, CCV, Castleton, Champlain, Williams, Vermont Technical College and Southern Vermont College
Employment: Networking graduates have been employed by many companies including US Cellular, Eveready, VT Timber Frame, Mount Anthony Union School District and Catamount Glass
Industry Recognized Certifications: Cisco Certified Training--Students completing this program will be eligible to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification examination and the CompTIA Network + certification exam (fee for exams)
College Connection: CCV - Students who wish to earn college credit for passing Networking Academy will be able to enroll in four Community College of Vermont, (see College Connections, page 40). Each course is graded separately and will appear on the student’s college transcript. These credits are fully transferable to most colleges which offer majors in Information Technology and related fields.

HVCC - Specific articulation agreements between Hudson Valley Community College and the Networking Academy program have been established.
Student Organizations: Students taking this program are eligible to participate in SkillsUSA contests, field trips and events.
