Medical Professions

Medical Professions Do you want to become a doctor, nurse, physical therapist, or enter one of the hundreds of other careers in the health care field? If yes, then this is the program for you! This program combines theoretical learning with the development of hands-on skills within the medical field. The first year of the program focuses on health career exploration, medical terminology, infection control, medical, legal, and ethical issues, the history and economics of health care, effective communications and client care. Students will also develop a concept of health and wellness from the perspective of a health consumer as well as a potential health professional. A wide range of medical careers will be explored as students job shadow health care professionals in careers such as: nursing, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, imaging, rehabilitation therapy, laboratory, pharmacy and renal dialysis.

The main goal of SkillsUSA is to provide students who are preparing for a wide variety of careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, with professional development opportunities that supplement their academic and technical education. SkillsUSA programs and activities help its 285,000 student members develop public speaking skills, and improve their ability to conduct and participate in meetings, manage financial matters, solve problems, and assume responsibility for community service. Students participate in state leadership conferences and competitions. Each June, students earning first place at the state level in leadership and technical skill competitions, travel to Kansas City, MO to compete at the national conference.

Credits:A maximum of three credits per year
Graduation Requirement:Science- A student who successfully completes this two-year program shall receive one credit in Science towards graduation requirements.
Prerequisite: A 10th grade reading level and above a 74 in college prep Biology and Instructor permission
Suggested Preparation: Medical & Human Services Introduction courses and Keyboarding

Adults are welcome to apply for daytime technical programs. A Vermont resident adult without a high school diploma is a secondary student and is eligible for tuition to be paid by their school district. Adults with high school diplomas will be charged a tuition. Financial aid may be available. Contact the Adult Education Office at 447-3596.
