Human Services

Human Services The first year of this program focuses on life-span development and issues. Students will learn professional work habits, work place safety practices, interpersonal, helping and communication skills. They will study human development, and health and wellness issues throughout the life cycle. The second year of the program focuses on gaining skills and knowledge in working with young children (birth through twelve years) and their families. Students will also learn about the services provided by human services agencies. Students may gain experience and knowledge by working in a variety of human services settings as part of the program. Placements may include home day care, center care, elementary school, preschool and working with the elderly. These placements enable the student to apply techniques learned in the classroom as well as further gain knowledge about human services, working with others and life-span development.

skills usa
The main goal of SkillsUSA is to provide students who are preparing for a wide variety of careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, with professional development opportunities that supplement their academic and technical education. SkillsUSA programs and activities help its 285,000 student members develop public speaking skills, and improve their ability to conduct and participate in meetings, manage financial matters, solve problems, and assume responsibility for community service. Students participate in state leadership conferences and competitions. Each June, students earning first place at the state level in leadership and technical skill competitions, travel to Kansas City, MO to compete at the national conference.

Credits:A maximum of three credits
Graduation Requirement:Social Studies- A student who successfully completes this two-year program shall receive one credit in Social Studies towards graduation requirements. (This credit may not count as a credit in U.S. History or World History.)
Prerequisite: Above a 69 in grade level math; above a 74 in 10th grade English and Instructor permission
Suggested Preparation: Introduction to Emergency Medicine and Introduction to Mental Illness Psychology and word processing skills
Post High School Education: Human Services graduates have enrolled in CCV, Hudson Valley Community College, Castleton, Putnam Hospital School of Nursing, University of New Hampshire, Southern Vermont College, Bennington College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
Certifications: Students can earn CPR & First Aid Certifications.

Adults are welcome to apply for daytime technical programs. A Vermont resident adult without a high school diploma is a secondary student and is eligible for tuition to be paid by their school district. Adults with high school diplomas will be charged a tuition. Financial aid may be available. Contact the Adult Education Office at 447-3596.
