Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Career Cluster

Forestry & Heavy Equipment

This two-year program introduces the student to forestry science and safe operation of chainsaws and heavy equipment. The first year students learn safe operation and maintenance of the program's chainsaws, backhoe/loader, bulldozer, tractor and dump truck. Forestry skills students will learn: identification of trees and forest pests, tree and lumber scaling, surveying, timber management, soil, water and wildlife conservation. The second year builds on the skills and knowledge the students gain in the first year. These skills and knowledge will be used in community and class projects. These projects will focus on the development of students’ planning, supervision and teamwork skills. Second year students will be introduced to forest management planning, arboriculture, basic welding, Commercial Drivers License (CDL), training and timber harvesting.
   
For students in grades: 11-12
Credits: Three credits per year
Graduation Requirement: Science- A student who is enrolled in Forestry 2, the second year of the program will be able to earn 1 science credit toward graduation requirements and the title NATURAL RESOURCES SCIENCE will appear on schedules, report cards, and transcripts with separate grades.
Prerequisite: 9th and 10th math and science with a 70 or above; or Instructor approval
Post High School Education: Forestry graduates have enrolled in University of Alaska, Castleton, University of Vermont, SUNY Cobleskill and Paul Smith College
Employment: Forestry graduates have been employed by King’s Moving, Vt. Roofing, Monick Tree Service, J.A. Bradley, Scott Smith Trucking, Yankee Plant, Hallbrother Surveyor, Henry’s Market, Vt. Container, J.C. Mann, J. C. Jerome, R.K. Miles
Student Organizations: Students taking this program are eligible to participate in FFA contests and events.

  • Soren Eriksson Game of Logging Chainsaw Safety Training Level 1-4 Certificates
  • OSHA 10 hour safety training
