Forestry & Heavy Equipment

forestry This two-year program introduces the student to forestry science and safe operation of chainsaws and heavy equipment. The first year students learn safe operation and maintenance of the Program's chainsaws, backhoe/loader, bulldozer, tractor and dump truck. Forestry skills students will learn: identification of trees and forest pests, tree and lumber scaling, surveying, forest management, soil, water and wildlife conservation. The second year builds on the skills and knowledge the students gain in the first year. These skills and knowledge will be used in community and class projects. These projects will focus on the development of students’ planning, supervision and teamwork skills. Second year students will be introduced to forest management planning, arboriculture, basic welding, Commercial Drivers License (CDL), training and timber harvesting.

The National FFA Association

The National FFA Association is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. FFA is an integral, intracurricular part of the agricultural education program, providing leadership training to supplement classroom education and hands-on career exploration. FFA programs and activities help members develop public speaking skills, conduct and participate in meetings, manage financial matters, strengthen problem solving abilities and assume civic responsibilities. Nearly 450,000 members participate on local, state and national levels in approximately 7,275 chapters.

Credits: The credits per year
Graduation Requirement: 1 Science credit in Forestry 2
Prerequisite:Above a 70 in 10th grade math and science and Instructor permission
Post High School Education:Forestry graduates have enrolled in University of Alaska, Castleton, University of Vermont and Paul Smith College

Adults are welcome to apply for daytime technical programs. A Vermont resident adult without a high school diploma is a secondary student and is eligible for tuition to be paid by their school district. Adults with high school diplomas will be charged a tuition. Financial aid may be available. Contact the Adult Education Office at 447-3596.
